The Indian Navy guards a coastline and island chain that stretches from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal, and the sea lanes beyond them. It is the service that the NDA Naval wing and the CDS route to the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala lead to, and it is the one that most defence GK papers test with ship names, exercises and recent commissionings. Underneath those news items sits a small base of fixed facts: how the service was named, who heads it, what its flag and motto mean, and how its commands and fleets fit together.
This page is the front door to the Navy section of our Defence GK library. It covers origins, Naval Headquarters, identity, Navy Day and the structure of the service, then points you to every page in the section.
Origins: From the Bombay Marine to the Indian Navy
The Navy's own history page traces the service to the East India Company's marine at Bombay, and then through a series of name changes.
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1686 | The Company's marine at Bombay is named the Bombay Marine |
| 1892 | Renamed the Royal Indian Marine, by then with over 50 vessels |
| 1934 | Reorganised as the Royal Indian Navy; it was presented the King's Colour in 1935 |
| 26 Jan 1950 | India becomes a republic and the prefix "Royal" is dropped: the Indian Navy |
| 1955 | Admiral Sir Mark Pizey becomes the first Chief of the Naval Staff, as the Commander-in-Chief's post becomes the CNS's |
| 22 Apr 1958 | Vice Admiral R.D. Katari becomes the first Indian Chief of the Naval Staff, serving until 4 June 1962 |
Pizey was the first CNS and Katari the first Indian CNS. The Navy's own history gives 22 April 1958 for Katari, and UPSC follows official history. The full list is on Chiefs of the Naval Staff.
Naval HQ, the Chief and the Principal Staff Officers
Naval Headquarters is in New Delhi and is styled the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy). Like Army HQ, it plans, raises, trains and equips; the commands and fleets operate.
- Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS): Adm Krishna Swaminathan has held the appointment since 31 May 2026. The CNS is an Admiral, commands the Navy and sits on the Chiefs of Staff Committee. Past holders are on Chiefs of the Naval Staff.
- Chief of Defence Staff (CDS): Gen N S Raja Subramani is the government's principal military adviser and does not command the Navy. See the CDS page.
The CNS is helped by four Principal Staff Officers (PSOs), all Vice Admirals according to PIB's appointment releases:
| PSO | Looks after |
|---|---|
| Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS), currently Vice Adm Ajay Kochhar (since 29 May 2026) | The CNS's deputy and the Navy's second-ranking officer |
| Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS) | Heads one of the staff branches at NHQ |
| Chief of Personnel (COP) | Officers, sailors, training and welfare |
| Chief of Materiel (COM) | Maintenance and life-cycle support of ships, submarines and aircraft; the post is held by a technical-branch officer |
The President is Supreme Commander. The CNS heads the Navy. The CDS chairs the Chiefs of Staff Committee but has no command over any service. The Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh, is the political head of the Ministry.
Identity: Motto, Crest and the Naval Ensign
Motto. The Navy's motto is "Sam No Varunah", a Vedic invocation to Varuna that PIB renders as "May the Ocean God be Auspicious unto us". It was adopted on the suggestion of C. Rajagopalachari, the first Indian Governor-General. It sits on a ribbon below the crest.
Crest. The crest shows the Ashoka Lion above an anchor. On 4 December 2022 the old "foul" anchor (with a rope round it) gave way to a clear anchor, which the Navy says stands for steadfastness and clarity of purpose.
The ensign. The naval ensign is the flag flown on ships and shore establishments. Its history is a favourite exam topic because it changed in 2022.
| Period | What the ensign carried |
|---|---|
| Before 1947 | The red St George's Cross on white, with the Union Jack in the upper-left corner (canton) |
| After Independence | The St George's Cross stayed; the national flag replaced the Union Jack in the canton |
| 2 Sep 2022 | At the commissioning of INS Vikrant at Cochin Shipyard, Kochi, the Prime Minister unveiled a new ensign: the national flag in the canton and a navy-blue and gold octagon on the fly side, holding the Ashoka Lion above an anchor |
| 4 Dec 2022 | The new crest and a new President's Standard and Colour were unveiled at Visakhapatnam on Navy Day |
The new ensign was dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. PIB says the octagon draws on his seal, and that its eight sides stand for the eight directions, signifying the Navy's reach. The government described the change as a move away from the colonial past; as a factual matter, the cross that was dropped had come down from the pre-Independence ensign.
Do not date the change to Navy Day. The ensign changed on 2 September 2022 (INS Vikrant); the crest and President's Standard were unveiled on 4 December 2022.
Fleets Versus Commands, Explained Simply
Candidates mix these up more than any other Navy fact. Think of a command as a regional headquarters on land and a fleet as the ships at sea.

| Level | Name | Headed by | Based |
|---|---|---|---|
| Command (operational) | Western Naval Command | Vice Admiral, FOC-in-C: Vice Adm Sanjay Vatsayan | Mumbai |
| Command (operational) | Eastern Naval Command | Vice Admiral, FOC-in-C: Vice Adm Sanjay Bhalla | Visakhapatnam |
| Command (training) | Southern Naval Command | Vice Admiral, FOC-in-C: Vice Adm Sameer Saxena | Kochi |
| Fleet | Western Fleet, the "Sword Arm" | Rear Admiral, Flag Officer Commanding | Mumbai |
| Fleet | Eastern Fleet | Rear Admiral, Flag Officer Commanding | Visakhapatnam |
The two operational commands look after bases, dockyards, logistics and area security, and the fleets are the fighting force that sails from those bases. PIB's own wording shows the split: a FOC-in-C heads a command, while a Flag Officer Commanding takes over a fleet in a ceremonial parade at the dockyard. Southern Naval Command is the Navy's training command, and its Flag Officer Sea Training works under it.
There is one more headquarters outside this scheme: the Andaman and Nicobar Command, headed by Vice Adm Vineet McCarty, which is a tri-service command. See its page and the plan for merging commands in theatre commands. The Army equivalent is on the Indian Army hub, and each service's ranks are lined up on rank equivalence.

Asked in past papers
Navy questions come in two kinds: fixed facts on ranks and history, and ship-name questions tied to the news of that year.
What is India's first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) called?
(a) Vikrant (b) Virat (c) Vaibhav (d) Varahe
Answer: (a). INS Vikrant was built at Cochin Shipyard and commissioned on 2 September 2022, the day the new ensign was unveiled. Virat (INS Viraat) is the tempting wrong option: it was a former British carrier, not an Indian-built one.
Which one of the following is a decommissioned aircraft carrier?
(a) INS Rajput (b) INS Chakra (c) INS Khanderi (d) INS Viraat
Answer: (d). INS Viraat, the former HMS Hermes, left service in 2017. The other three are a destroyer and two submarines, so the word "carrier" decides the question.
Which one of the following military operations was not undertaken by India?
(a) Operation Ablaze (b) Operation Spider's Web (c) Operation Trident (d) Operation Bandar
Answer: (b). Operation Trident is the 1971 Karachi attack behind Navy Day. Operation Spider's Web was Ukraine's June 2025 drone strike on Russian air bases, so it is the odd one out.
Which one of the following statements about 'Nilgiri', 'Surat' and 'Vaghsheer' is correct?
(a) These are Tiger Reserves in the state of Gujarat. (b) These are combatants commissioned by the Indian Navy. (c) These are Biodiversity parks maintained by the Indian Army. (d) These are Tiger Reserves maintained by the Indian Navy.
Answer: (b). A stealth frigate, a destroyer and a Kalvari-class submarine were commissioned together at Mumbai in January 2025. Three of the options are nature-reserve decoys; the Navy's habit of naming ships after places is the clue.
Which one of the following is not a correct ascending order of commissioned ranks in the defence forces of India?
(a) Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier, Major General, Lieutenant General, General (b) Flying Officer, Flight Lieutenant, Squadron Leader, Wing Commander, Group Captain, Air Commodore, Air Vice Marshal, Air Marshal, Air Chief Marshal (c) Flying Officer, Flight Lieutenant, Squadron Leader, Group Captain, Wing Commander, Air Commodore, Air Vice Marshal, Air Marshal, Air Chief Marshal (d) Sub Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain, Commodore, Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, Admiral
Answer: (c). Group Captain ranks above Wing Commander, so (c) is wrongly ordered. The Navy ladder in (d) is correct, so a candidate who panics at the unfamiliar Navy names wastes time on it.
Ranks and "first" facts never change, so learn them once from Navy ranks and our rank equivalence chart. Ship names change every cycle, so keep up with our daily defence notes and practise on the NDA and CDS past-paper pages.

Where to Go Next
For the career side, read career in the Indian Navy and the women in defence forces page. Boards ask "know your service", so keep our SSB interview tips open next to this page, then read defence days and ceremonial traditions (the President's Colour is a Navy "first"). Navy entry for graduates is through the CDS course to the Indian Naval Academy, and for 12th-pass candidates through the Naval wing of the NDA, which our NDA batches cover with weekly tests and SSB training.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the Chief of the Naval Staff of India?
Adm Krishna Swaminathan has been the Chief of the Naval Staff since 31 May 2026. The CNS heads the Indian Navy from Naval Headquarters in New Delhi and holds the rank of Admiral. The President is the Supreme Commander of the armed forces.
Why is Navy Day celebrated on 4 December?
Navy Day marks Operation Trident, the Indian Navy's missile-boat attack on Karachi harbour on 4 December 1971. PIB records that the boats hit ships, an oil installation and shore defences. Until 1972 the day was observed on 15 December; the move to 4 December was decided that year.
What is the difference between a naval command and a fleet?
A command is a regional headquarters on land, headed by a Vice Admiral called the FOC-in-C, which looks after bases, dockyards and area security. A fleet is the force of ships at sea, headed by a Rear Admiral called the Flag Officer Commanding. The Navy has three commands and two fleets.
How many commands does the Indian Navy have?
The Indian Navy has three commands: Western Naval Command at Mumbai, Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam and Southern Naval Command at Kochi. The Western and Eastern commands are operational and Southern is the training command. The Andaman and Nicobar Command is a separate tri-service command.
What is the new Indian Navy flag and when was it introduced?
The new naval ensign was unveiled on 2 September 2022 at the commissioning of INS Vikrant. It drops the St George's Cross, keeps the national flag in the upper-left corner and adds a navy-blue and gold octagon inspired by the seal of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The octagon holds the Ashoka Lion above an anchor.
