Purpose of Group Tasks(Snake Race

  • The tasks are designed with scientific considerations to test team-building and cooperative behavior.

  • First, you face Group Discussion (competition in ideas).

  • Next, Group Planning Exercise (sharing and exchanging views).

  • Finally, in Group Obstacle Race, the focus is on team cooperation, not just individual performance.

Conduct of the Race

  • Teams line up at the start line with their snake.

  • The officer (Conducting Officer) explains the obstacles. Other officers watch silently.

  • Typical obstacles:

    1. Inclined ramp / zig-zag structures – If you slip, you must go back and repeat.

    2. Figure-of-eight obstacle (Gate) – You must pass through in a specific sequence, managing traffic like a real group.

    3. Wall climb – Very tall (18–20 feet), requiring teamwork. Candidates must help each other to cross.

    4. Smaller walls or pipes – Balance and coordination tests.

    5. Huge wooden structures (like village water pipes).

  • Each obstacle demands coordination, cooperation, and physical effort.

  • Candidates learn how to negotiate, manage time, and help weaker members.

Observations by GTO

  • The GTO observes:

    • Who takes initiative?

    • Who helps others?

    • Who coordinates and motivates?

    • Who ensures the snake is carried properly?

  • Even humor and group cheer (“Bharat Mata ki Jai!”) show team spirit and morale.

War Cry:-

The GTO gives an option to the candidates to choose a war cry. A war cry is nothing but a short inspirational quote used at the time of doing some missionary tasks.
e.g. ‘JAI HIND’, ‘BHARAT MATHA KE JAI’ etc.

Expectation of the GTO from the candidates in Snake Race:-

1. The candidate should not violate the rule.
2. The candidate should Try to remain ahead as much as possible.
3. He should help his team mates.
4. One should encourage and help other candidates while climbing the high wall.
5. The candidate should keep the interest of the group in mind.
