CDS 2 2026 Result Out: Your SSB Plan, and Why One Roll-Number Search Is Not Enough

CDS 2 2026 Result Out: Your SSB Plan, and Why One Roll-Number Search Is Not Enough

20 October 2026 16 min read

The CDS (II) 2026 written result is out. What the Commission's press note actually says — the five roll-number lists most candidates only half-check, why your first choice sends you to a different headquarters and a different portal, the registration deadline that does not exist, and how a selection board reads a graduate differently from a school-leaver.

8,956Qualified 451Seats 50%Of your marks unplayed

The written paper did not select you. It queued you.

Result declared 19 Oct 2026 · papers held 13 Sep 2026 · five courses

Below is what the Commission's press note actually says, what it does not say, and what to do about it this week. If you have ten minutes, read the whole thing. If you have two, read the five answers first.

The short answers

  1. Do I have to register anywhere? Only if your first choice was Army — IMA or OTA. Navy and Air Force candidates use different portals entirely. Which one is mine →
  2. Is there a registration deadline? No. This press note sets none. The only dates in it fall in 2027. Why that matters →
  3. How much does the SSB count? Exactly half your final merit. The medical carries no marks at all. The split →
  4. When do I see my written marks? Not until after the final result of the OTA course — a year or more away. The reason →
  5. Am I only on one list? Probably not. There are five lists and most men appear on more than one. Check all five →

Find your path

  • Army first choice (IMA or OTA) — register, and send documents to the right place. Go →
  • Navy first choice — different portal, different headquarters. Go →
  • Air Force first choice — read this before you travel. Go →
  • You have been to a board before — start here instead. Go →
  • Just want the to-do list — eight things, this week. Go →

Search all five lists. You may be on four of them.

Paragraph 2 of the press note contains a sentence almost nobody reads carefully: "There are some common candidates in the four lists for various courses except for OTA (Women)."

There are five separate roll-number lists in that PDF, one per course. A male candidate can appear on up to four of them.

What happens in practice is this. A candidate opens the PDF, searches their roll number, finds it in the OTA list — the longest list, so statistically often the first hit — closes the file, and tells everyone they have cleared for OTA. They may also be on the IMA list.

That is not a small difference. IMA leads to a permanent commission. OTA leads to a short service commission of fourteen years. One is a career to retirement; the other is a fixed engagement with a different pension position at the end of it.

Search the document five times, once per list.

The five courses are the Indian Military Academy 163rd (DE) Course, the Indian Naval Academy course, the Air Force Academy Pre-Flying Training Course 222 F(P) — all three commencing July 2027 — and the Officers Training Academy 126th SSC (Men) (NT) and 126th SSC Women (NT) courses, both commencing October 2027. The OTA (Women) list stands alone; the Commission's wording excludes it from the overlap, so women candidates have exactly one list to find themselves in.

8,956 qualified. 451 get in. And the SSB is half your marks.

The notification advertised 451 vacancies: reported as 100 for IMA, 26 for INA, 32 for AFA, 275 for OTA (Men) and 18 for OTA (Women). Those course-wise figures come from the notification rather than this press note, and Services Headquarters can revise allocations later — treat the split as indicative and the total as your planning number.

Roughly one qualified candidate in twenty will be commissioned. That is not the system failing. That is the system working as designed, because the written paper was never the filter. It was the queue.

Now the part most coverage of this result will skip entirely.

(3 papers × 100)
300 marks600
OTA (Men and Women)200 marks
(2 papers × 100)
200 marks400

Your written score, whatever it was, has bought you a place at a table where half the total is still unplayed, and everyone at that table starts the second half level. The candidate who topped the written paper and the candidate who scraped through by one mark are now separated by a margin that five days at a selection centre can erase in either direction.

If you have been carrying the written result as proof you are good at this — put it down. It is proof that you are eligible.

Your first choice decides your portal, your headquarters and your deadline

The Commission does not give one set of instructions. It gives three, routed by the first choice you recorded on your application back in May and June — a choice you cannot renegotiate now.

If your first choice wasYour portalOriginals go toCertificate deadline

Air Force careerindianairforce.cdac.in Dte of Personnel (Officers), Kasturba Gandhi Marg 13 May 2027

Two things follow that candidates routinely get wrong.

First, only Army-first-choice candidates register on joinindianarmy.nic.in. A Navy or Air Force first-choice candidate who registers there has not advanced their case by a single day.

Second, quoting the note directly: "Those candidates who have already registered on the recruiting directorate website are advised not to register again." If you registered during an earlier CDS or NDA cycle, you are already in the system. A second registration creates a duplicate profile, and duplicate profiles are a known reason call-up letters go to an email nobody reads.

Do this instead

Log in to the portal you already have and check that the email address on your profile is one you open daily. Call-up information arrives by email. Not by post, and not reliably by SMS. If your address changes before your SSB, the note is explicit that you tell Army, Naval or Air Headquarters directly — not UPSC.

There is no registration deadline. Anyone saying otherwise is describing NDA.

A genre of advertisement will appear this week telling you that you have days to act. Read the press note before you believe it.

The only hard dates in the notice are for submission of original certificates — 13 May 2027 for AFA, 1 July 2027 for IMA and INA, 1 October 2027 for the SSC courses. The note also instructs, in terms, that "The candidates must not send any original Certificates to the Union Public Service Commission."

Unlike the NDA result, this press note sets no registration deadline at all.

That does not mean there is no clock. It means the clock is a different one. Boards allot dates as candidates become available to be called, so the earlier you are in the system with a correct email address, the more say you tend to have over when you go and the more room you have to move it. More importantly, the scarce resource is not your eligibility — it is the number of weeks between today and the morning you report. You do not know that number and it may be small. Everything below assumes it is.

Your candidature is provisional — here is what can still end it

The note says: "The candidature of all the candidates, whose Roll Numbers are shown in the lists below, is provisional."

Qualifying the written paper establishes nothing about your eligibility. Age, educational qualification and any NCC (C) claim are still to be proved on original documents, and any of them can end the attempt months from now. Final-year candidates should be especially careful: your degree result has to exist by the dates the notification specifies, and a backlog that pushes your completion past the deadline is a problem no SSB performance will solve.

Medical fitness sits in the same category. It carries no marks, which is exactly why candidates treat it as a formality — and it is the most common way a recommended candidate still fails to get commissioned.

Fixable now, not later

You have months of runway and no medical board has looked at you yet. Several common rejection grounds close in exactly this window and in no other:

  • Dental caries and gum disease
  • Body mass index at either end
  • Deviated nasal septum
  • Uncorrected refractive error within permissible limits

Our page on NDA and CDS medical standards sets out what the boards actually look at. Read it this week — after you are recommended there is no time left to act on it.

You will not see your written marks until after the OTA final result

Paragraph 7 has a detail with an odd consequence. Your marks-sheet appears on upsconline.nic.in within fifteen days of the publication of the final result of the OTA course — after the SSB interviews are complete — and stays up for thirty days.

Note which course that is pegged to. OTA commences in October 2027, the latest of the five. So an IMA first-choice candidate waits on the OTA timeline to learn their own written score, a year or more from now.

Stop hunting for your marks. Stop comparing yourself to last year's cut-off. Neither number will reach you in time to change anything you do.

The board reads a 23-year-old differently from a 17-year-old

This is the largest difference between a CDS board and an NDA one, and it is almost never written about, because most SSB content is written for eighteen-year-olds and then relabelled.

An NDA candidate arrives at seventeen with a school record and little else, and the board calibrates for that. You arrive at twenty-two or twenty-four with a degree, a division, possibly backlogs, possibly a job, possibly a gap — and every one of those appears on the Personal Information Questionnaire you fill in on day one. The Interviewing Officer has that sheet in front of them throughout. It is not a formality. It is the spine of the conversation.

If you graduated two years ago and have been preparing since

You will be asked what you did in those two years. "I was preparing" is only credible if something in the two years corroborates it — attempts sat, a job taken and left for a stated reason, coaching joined, fitness built, a skill acquired. An unaccounted year is not disqualifying. An unaccounted year the candidate is visibly uncomfortable discussing is a different matter.

The discomfort is the data.

If you are working

You will be asked why you would leave a job paying more than a Lieutenant earns. The board is not testing your patriotism with that question, and candidates who answer with patriotism tend to do badly. It is testing whether you have actually priced a pay cut, field postings, a spouse's career and a transfer every two or three years — or whether you are running from a job you dislike towards an idea you have not examined. The honest answer, delivered calmly, beats the noble one every time.

If you are in your final year

Expect to be pressed on what you did beyond the syllabus. The assessors want evidence that you organise your own time, because at your age that is what effective intelligence looks like. A seventeen-year-old is forgiven for having done nothing but study. A twenty-two-year-old is not.

If you have backlogs or a weak division

Do not pre-empt the question with an excuse. State the fact, state what caused it, state what you did about it. The board has seen every version of the deflection, and none of them work.

If you have been to a board before: screened out and conference out are different problems

A large share of CDS qualifiers are not first-timers. You declare previous attempts, and the board has them.

Be precise about what actually happened last time, because the three common outcomes have almost nothing to do with one another.

  • Screened out on day one — your OIR performance or your picture perception and discussion did not get you past the sift. A problem of speed, clarity and group behaviour under time pressure.
  • Conference out — you completed five days and the board, on balance, was not convinced.
  • Not recommended after a full conference — the same thing, stated plainly.

A candidate who was screened out and a candidate who went to conference have entirely different work to do. Treating them as the same failure is the single most common error of a repeat attempt.

The second thing: what changes an outcome is demonstrable change, not a better-told story. Candidates return with the same material, more polished — the same anecdotes, the same self-description, the same responses rehearsed to a shine. That polish is precisely what the psychologist is trained to detect, and a second attempt that reads as rehearsed is worse off than a first attempt that reads as raw.

If nothing in your life has changed since the last board, the board will work that out in about forty minutes.

Air Force first choice: CPSS is once in a lifetime

There are 32 AFA vacancies in this cycle, for Pre-Flying Training Course 222 F(P), across the entire country.

Understand this before you travel

Flying-branch candidates sit the Computerised Pilot Selection System. The official position is that CPSS is a once-in-a-lifetime test. Fail it and you cannot take it again — and the failure closes the flying branch of every Indian armed service, permanently. Not just the Air Force, and not just this attempt. Candidates who have previously failed CPSS or the older PABT are not eligible to sit it again at all.

Ground duty and technical branches remain open to a candidate who fails CPSS. But this is a decision to make deliberately and in advance, with the permanence understood — not something to discover on the morning it is administered.

The five days, and what each one actually measures

Day 1 — Screening

Officer Intelligence Rating tests, then Picture Perception and Description, then the group discussion on that picture. A substantial part of the batch is thanked and sent home the same evening.

Screening is not an assessment of your personality. It is a sift that measures whether you can read an ambiguous picture quickly, commit to a reading of it, and hold a position in a group without either dominating or disappearing. Our page on the screening test covers the recurring failure modes.

Day 2 — Psychology

Thematic Apperception, Word Association, Situation Reaction and Self Description, all in one morning. The defining constraint is time, not content. You are not being asked to write well. You are being asked to produce your first instinct sixty times in a row with no room to edit it.

Graduates often do worse here than school-leavers for one specific reason: they try to compose. See the psychological tests and WAT examples.

Days 3 and 4 — Group Testing Officer tasks

Group discussion, group planning, progressive group task, half group task, command task, individual obstacles, snake race, lecturette, final group task.

This is the part of the board that cannot be prepared for in a classroom, and it is where graduate candidates most often come undone — strong in discussion, weak on the ground, visibly unused to physical improvisation in a group. The GTO series sets out each task.

Day 4 or 5 — Interview and Conference

The Interviewing Officer works from your PIQ. The conference is the whole board reconciling three independent assessments. See the personal interview in SSB.

Your GD and lecturette brief is already on your phone

The CDS and OTA six-month current affairs compendium we published for the 13 September paper covers February to August 2026 — which is, almost exactly, the window your group discussion and lecturette topics will be drawn from.

It was built as a written-exam asset. As of 19 October it is an SSB asset, and most candidates will delete it without noticing. The accompanying 150-question practice set is the fastest way to find out which of those topics you can actually talk about for three minutes.

On the lecturette itself: you pick one topic from a card of four, get roughly three minutes to prepare, and speak for about three minutes. The failure mode for graduates is not ignorance — it is structure. You know more about the topic than a seventeen-year-old would and you organise none of it, so you open well, drift, and stop mid-thought when time is called.

Four anchors are enough: an opening line, two points with one example each, and a conclusion you decided on before you stood up. Our guides on how to give a lecturette and lecturette topics for 2026 go into the mechanics.

What to do in the next ten days

If you do nothing else

  1. Search all five lists.
  2. Fix the email address on your portal profile.
  3. Book a dental appointment.

The full list, in order, and none of it takes long.

  1. Search all five lists, not one. Write down every course you appear in.
  2. Identify your first choice as recorded on your application, and from that work out which portal, which headquarters and which certificate deadline apply to you.
  3. If Army was your first choice, register on joinindianarmy.nic.in — unless you already have an account, in which case log in and correct your email instead of creating a second one.
  4. Assemble originals and attested copies of date of birth, educational qualification and NCC (C) if claimed. Do not post them to UPSC.
  5. Book a dental appointment and get an honest BMI reading this week. These are the two fixable things with the longest lead time.
  6. Write your PIQ answers out in full, in advance — the gap, the job, the backlog, the division — and read them aloud to someone who will tell you when you sound evasive.
  7. Speak for three minutes a day, out loud, on a topic from the compendium. Speaking. Not reading.
  8. Get outdoors. The GTO ground is the one part of this you cannot close the gap on in the final week.

Where we come in

The Cavalier has been preparing candidates in Delhi since 2001. Our SSB interview coaching is built around the ground tasks and the interview rather than around lectures, for the straightforward reason that those are the parts you cannot rehearse alone at home — we run them on our own five-acre GTO ground, under officers who have sat on selection boards.

SSB batches start every Sunday; the written course batch begins on the 3rd. Schedule and fees are on the upcoming courses page. If you would rather judge us on outcomes than on claims, start with the selections.

Frequently asked questions

How many candidates qualified in CDS 2 2026?
8,956 candidates qualified for the SSB interview, on the basis of the written examination held on 13 September 2026. The result was declared on 19 October 2026.

Can my roll number appear in more than one list?
Yes. The Commission states that there are common candidates across the four lists for the various courses, with the exception of OTA (Women). Search all five lists rather than stopping at the first match.

Do I have to register on joinindianarmy.nic.in?
Only if your first choice was Army — that is, IMA or OTA. Navy first-choice candidates deal with joinindiannavy.gov.in and Air Force first-choice candidates with careerindianairforce.cdac.in. If you have already registered on the Army portal in an earlier cycle, the Commission advises you not to register again.

Is there a deadline to register for the SSB after the CDS 2 2026 result?
The press note sets no registration deadline. The only dates it specifies are for submission of original certificates: 13 May 2027 for AFA, 1 July 2027 for IMA and INA, and 1 October 2027 for the SSC courses. Registering early is still sensible, because call-up dates are allotted as candidates enter the system.

How much does the SSB count towards the final merit?
Exactly half. For IMA, INA and AFA the written carries 300 marks and the SSB carries 300, a combined 600. For OTA the written carries 200 and the SSB 200, a combined 400. The medical examination is qualifying only and carries no marks.

When will UPSC release my marks and the cut-off?
Within fifteen days of the publication of the final result of the OTA course — that is, after the SSB interviews are complete — and they then remain on upsconline.nic.in for thirty days. There is no way to see your written score before that.

Should I send my original certificates to UPSC?
No. The Commission instructs candidates specifically not to send originals to UPSC. They go to the Army, Navy or Air Force headquarters named in the press note, depending on your first choice.

Can I attempt CPSS again if I fail it?
No. The official position is that CPSS is a once-in-a-lifetime test, and candidates who have previously failed CPSS or PABT are not eligible to take it again. A failure closes the flying branch of every Indian armed service. Ground duty and technical branches remain open.

What is the difference between the IMA and OTA courses I qualified for?
IMA leads to a permanent commission; OTA leads to a short service commission. The IMA 163rd (DE) Course and the Indian Naval Academy and Air Force Academy courses commence in July 2027; the OTA 126th SSC (Men) and 126th SSC Women courses commence in October 2027.

This article summarises the Commission's press note of 19 October 2026 declaring the written result of CDS (II) 2026, together with the examination notification and official service material. Course-wise vacancies are as advertised in the notification and may be revised by Services Headquarters. Dates, eligibility and procedure should always be confirmed against the official notification on upsc.gov.in and against your own call-up letter.
