Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy — nearly half of all Indians depend on it for a living. For the NDA Geography paper, this is a high-yield chapter: examiners repeatedly ask about cropping seasons, leading producer states, soil-crop pairings and the Green Revolution. Why Agriculture Matters for India and the NDA

About two-thirds of India's population is directly or indirectly engaged in agriculture. It supplies food for over 1.4 billion people, raw materials for industries like textiles and sugar, and a large share of export earnings. Agriculture also keeps allied activities — dairy, poultry, fisheries and food processing — running.

India is an agricultural powerhouse: it ranks among the world's top producers of rice, wheat, sugarcane, cotton, tea, pulses and milk. Yet most farming is done on small, fragmented landholdings and still depends heavily on the monsoon, which is why irrigation, minimum support prices and farm reforms keep appearing in the news.

Geographically, what grows where depends on a simple chain: climate, soil and water together decide the crop. Once you understand this chain, you stop memorising blindly and start reasoning, which is exactly the skill the NDA paper rewards.

The NDA exam mixes static facts (which state leads in a crop) with concept questions (why a crop grows where it does). Learn both the “what” and the “why”.

The Three Cropping Seasons

Indian agriculture follows the monsoon calendar, giving us three main cropping seasons. This is the single most-tested idea in the chapter.

Kharif (monsoon crops)

Sown with the onset of the south-west monsoon (June–July) and harvested in September–October. They need high temperature and heavy rainfall.

  • Rice, maize, jowar, bajra, tur (arhar), moong, cotton, jute, groundnut, soybean.

Rabi (winter crops)

Sown in October–December and harvested in April–June. They need a cool growing season and warm, dry ripening.

  • Wheat, barley, gram (chana), peas, mustard, linseed.

Zaid (summer crops)

A short season between rabi and kharif (March–June) on irrigated land.

  • Watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, vegetables and fodder crops.
Key point

Kharif = sown with monsoon, harvested autumn. Rabi = sown winter, harvested spring. Zaid = short summer crops on irrigation. Memory hook: “Kharif comes with Kaali ghata (monsoon).”

Types of Farming in India

Farming practices vary with soil, climate, technology and the size of the holding. Examiners often ask you to match a definition to its name.

Primitive subsistence farming

Done on small patches using primitive tools (hoe, dao) and family labour. Includes shifting cultivation (slash-and-burn), known locally as jhumming in the North-East, podu in Andhra and bewar in Madhya Pradesh.

Intensive subsistence farming

Practised where land is scarce and population is high. Farmers use more labour, fertiliser and irrigation on a small plot to get maximum output.

Commercial farming

Uses high doses of modern inputs (HYV seeds, fertilisers, machines) to raise output for sale in the market. Plantation farming — tea, coffee, rubber, sugarcane — is a type of commercial farming grown on large estates.

Exam tip

The same crop can be commercial in one state and subsistence in another. Rice is commercial in Punjab/Haryana but subsistence in Odisha. The NDA paper has used exactly this distinction.

Major Food Grains: Rice and Wheat

Rice

India's staple food and a kharif crop. It needs high temperature (above 25°C) and high humidity with rainfall above 100 cm; in low-rainfall areas it is grown with irrigation. Grown on plains of the north and north-east, coastal areas and deltas.

  • Leading producers: West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
  • Through canals and tubewells, even Punjab and Haryana grow rice despite low rainfall.

Wheat

India's second most important cereal and the main rabi crop. It needs a cool growing season and bright sunshine at ripening, with 50–75 cm of rainfall.

  • Two main zones: the Ganga–Sutlej plains in the north-west and the black-soil region of the Deccan.
  • Leading producers: Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
Remember

Rice = warm + wet + kharif. Wheat = cool + drier + rabi. Both are the staple-food backbone India worked to secure through the Green Revolution.

Millets, Maize and Pulses

Millets (coarse grains)

Jowar, bajra and ragi are hardy crops that grow on poorer soils with less rain — nutritionally very rich.

  • Jowar: third most important food crop by area; a rain-fed crop of the moist regions.
  • Bajra: grows well on sandy and shallow black soils (Rajasthan, Gujarat).
  • Ragi: a crop of dry regions, rich in iron, calcium and other micronutrients (Karnataka leads).

Maize

A crop used as both food and fodder; a kharif crop needing 21–27°C and old alluvial soil. Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar are major producers.

Pulses

India is the largest producer and consumer of pulses in the world — they are the country's main source of plant protein for a largely vegetarian population. Tur (arhar), urad, moong, masur, peas and gram are the major pulses. Being leguminous, they fix nitrogen from the air through bacteria in their root nodules, so they are often grown in rotation with cereals to restore soil fertility and reduce fertiliser use.

Key point

Pulses are mostly rain-fed. Gram is a rabi pulse; tur, moong and urad are kharif pulses. Their nitrogen-fixing nature is a favourite one-mark fact.

Cash Crops: Sugarcane, Cotton, Jute and Oilseeds

Sugarcane

A tropical and subtropical crop needing hot, humid climate (21–27°C) and 75–100 cm rainfall. It is the source of sugar, gur (jaggery), khandsari and molasses. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra lead.

Cotton

A kharif crop of the drier parts of the Deccan plateau that loves black (regur) soil. It needs high temperature, light rainfall, 210 frost-free days and bright sunshine. India is believed to be its original home.

Jute

Called the golden fibre, grown on well-drained fertile alluvial soils in flood plains, mainly in West Bengal. Used for gunny bags, ropes and mats.

Oilseeds

Groundnut (a kharif crop, Gujarat leads), mustard (rabi), soybean, sesamum and linseed. India is a major oilseed producer.

Common mistake

Students confuse the fibres. Cotton grows on black soil in the dry Deccan; jute grows on wet alluvial flood-plains of the east. They have opposite soil and water needs.

Beverage and Plantation Crops

Tea

A plantation crop that needs warm, moist, frost-free climate all year and well-drained, humus-rich loamy soil on hill slopes (so water does not collect at the roots). Grown in Assam, the Darjeeling hills of West Bengal and the Nilgiris. It is labour-intensive, requiring abundant cheap and skilled labour.

Coffee

India produces a good quality of Arabica coffee, initially brought from Yemen. It is grown mainly in the hills of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu (the Baba Budan Hills being the historic centre). Coffee needs hot, humid climate, shade and well-drained slopes, much like tea, but on the southern hills rather than the north-east.

Rubber

An equatorial crop also grown in tropical and subtropical areas, needing moist, humid climate, rainfall above 200 cm and temperature above 25°C. Mainly Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Exam tip

Plantation crops (tea, coffee, rubber, sugarcane) are grown on large estates and link farming to industry. Tea and coffee are the two big beverage crops — do not mix them up with their states.

The Green Revolution and Other Revolutions

In the mid-1960s India launched the Green Revolution to become self-sufficient in food grains. It combined High-Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds, chemical fertilisers, pesticides, assured irrigation and modern machinery.

  • Geneticist M.S. Swaminathan is called the “Father of the Green Revolution in India.”
  • It dramatically raised wheat and rice output, especially in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.

The colour-coded revolutions

  • White Revolution — milk (Operation Flood, led by Verghese Kurien).
  • Blue Revolution — fish and aquaculture.
  • Yellow Revolution — oilseeds.
  • Golden Revolution — horticulture and honey.

Soils, Irrigation and Inputs

Crops are tied to soils, so the NDA paper often pairs the two.

  • Alluvial soil (northern plains) — most fertile; good for rice, wheat, sugarcane.
  • Black (regur) soil (Deccan trap) — retains moisture; ideal for cotton.
  • Red and laterite soils — suit pulses, millets and, where treated, tea/coffee/cashew.

Because the monsoon is uneven, irrigation is vital. Main sources are canals, tubewells/wells and tanks — tank irrigation is common in the peninsular south because the hard rock holds little ground water. India also depends on inputs like HYV seeds, chemical and organic fertilisers and, in places, organic farming, which avoids chemical inputs and is gaining ground. Land reforms such as consolidation of holdings and the abolition of intermediaries (the zamindari system) also shaped modern Indian agriculture.

Remember

Cotton ↔ black soil and rice/wheat/sugarcane ↔ alluvial soil are the two pairings most worth memorising.

Worked Example: Reasoning Out a Crop

Worked example

A crop is sown in June–July with the onset of the monsoon, grows on black soil in the dry Deccan plateau, and India is believed to be its original home. Identify the crop and its season.

Step 1: Sown June–July with monsoon → it is a KHARIF crop. Step 2: Black (regur) soil + dry Deccan + light rainfall → points to a fibre crop. Step 3: “Original home is India” + black soil → this is COTTON (not jute, which needs wet alluvial soil). Conclusion: The crop is COTTON, a kharif crop.

Notice how three clues — season, soil and origin — converge on one answer. This is exactly how to attack “identify the crop” questions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Calling gram a kharif crop — gram (chana) is a rabi pulse.
  • Swapping cotton and jute soils — cotton = black/dry, jute = alluvial/wet.
  • Thinking tea grows in waterlogged land — tea needs well-drained slopes so roots do not sit in water.
  • Confusing the revolutions — White is milk, Blue is fish, not the other way round.
  • Assuming rice only grows in high-rainfall areas — with irrigation it thrives in dry Punjab and Haryana too.
Common mistake

Leading-producer states change with each survey. Trust the broad ranks the NCERT gives (e.g., UP leads sugarcane and wheat) rather than memorising exact tonnage figures that examiners rarely test.
