On 29 August 2026, India observed National Sports Day, marking the 121st birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. The principal event was held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium near India Gate, New Delhi, with Union Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya and Union Law and Justice Minister Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal garlanding his statue before a morning of sporting activity.
This year's programme centred on 'Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein' β "one hour on the playing field" β a nationwide call for citizens, particularly the young, to give at least an hour to sport and physical activity, framed as a strengthening of the Fit India Movement.
The man, and why the date is his
Dhyan Chand was born on 29 August 1905 and served in the Indian Army, joining as a sepoy in the Punjab Regiment and rising to the rank of Major. He learned and played his hockey inside the Army, which is why this item belongs as much to armed-forces history as to sport β a point NDA candidates should be able to make.
His record is the reason for the reverence, and the specifics are examinable:
- Three Olympic gold medals in hockey β Amsterdam 1928, Los Angeles 1932 and Berlin 1936, captaining the side in 1936.
- India's dominance in that era was total: the 1932 final against the United States ended 24β1, a scoreline that still stands as an emblem of the gap.
- He was known as "The Wizard" or "The Magician" for ball control that contemporaries described as making the ball appear stuck to his stick.
- He received the Padma Bhushan in 1956.
His autobiography, Goal, and the volume of anecdote around him β including the durable story that opposing officials once checked his stick for a magnet β are the sort of colour that makes an interview answer memorable, provided the verifiable facts anchor it.
The awards, and the renaming that gets tested
This is where questions concentrate, because the names changed recently and stale material still carries the old ones.
| Award | For | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award | The highest sporting honour | Instituted 1991-92 as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna; renamed in 2021 |
| Arjuna Award | Outstanding performance over four years | Instituted 1961 |
| Dhyan Chand Award | Lifetime achievement | A separate and older award β not the Khel Ratna |
| Dronacharya Award | Coaches | |
| Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar | Institutions and corporates promoting sport | |
| Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy | The best-performing university in inter-university tournaments |
Two traps live in that table. First, the Khel Ratna and the Dhyan Chand Award are different honours that now both carry his name β the first for a specific outstanding performance period, the second for lifetime achievement. Second, the MAKA Trophy goes to a university, not an individual, which candidates regularly miss.
National Sports Awards are conventionally conferred at Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the date of the ceremony has in recent years been separated from 29 August itself, so the observance and the ceremony are not always the same day.
The policy scaffolding around the day
An observance is only worth an article if it attaches to structures the paper actually tests. Three do.
The Fit India Movement, launched on 29 August 2019 β on National Sports Day itself β is a public-health rather than an elite-sport programme, aimed at making physical activity habitual. 'Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein' is this year's expression of it.
Khelo India is the grassroots and school-level scheme, with its Youth, University, Winter and Para Games β the base of the pyramid.
The Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) supports identified elite athletes with medal prospects β the apex.
Keep the pyramid straight: Fit India is about the general population's health; Khelo India is about broad sporting participation and talent identification; TOPS is about a small number of potential medallists. Three programmes, three different populations, and the commonest error is treating them as interchangeable. The Sports Authority of India, established in 1984 after the 1982 Asian Games, is the field organisation running much of it, and the whole structure is currently oriented towards building an athlete pool for a possible 2036 Olympic Games, for which India has proposed Ahmedabad.
And hockey's own arc is worth a line, because it frames the reverence. India won eight Olympic gold medals in hockey, the last at Moscow 1980, before a long decline associated with the shift from grass to artificial turf β a surface change that favoured power and speed over the close dribbling skills at which the Indian game excelled, and which India's infrastructure was slow to adopt. The bronze medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 ended a 41-year medal drought. That is the honest arc: unmatched dominance, a long fall with a specific technical cause, and a genuine recovery β a better answer than either nostalgia or dismissal, and material that sits in the NDA general knowledge syllabus.

π How this gets asked (PYQ pattern)
Sports questions in the NDA paper cluster in four shapes, and this day supplies all four. The award-matching item β Khel Ratna, Arjuna, Dronacharya, Dhyan Chand and MAKA matched to their category, where the Khel Ratna renaming and the separate Dhyan Chand Award are the traps. The date item β 29 August for National Sports Day, set against 23 August (National Space Day) and other observances in a matching set. The Olympic-record item β the years of India's hockey golds and the eight-gold total. The programme item β Fit India against Khelo India against TOPS.
The fresh 2026 hook is the 121st anniversary and the 'Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein' initiative. A statement pair on the date and the Khel Ratna's renaming is the likeliest single item β both halves true. As always, we describe the recurring pattern, not any exact past question.
Preparing for the NDA? Dhyan Chand is a rare topic that is simultaneously a sports question and an Army question, so it repays learning properly rather than skimming.
