The Andaman & Nicobar Command: India's Only Tri-Service Command — An NDA Defence Explainer

On 9 August 2026, the Vice-President launched the Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, during a visit to the territory. The islands are far more than a scenic union territory: they host the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), India's first and only tri-service theatre command, and they sit astride the approaches to the Strait of Malacca. For an NDA aspirant this is prime defence-and-geography material, and it connects directly to the ongoing debate on theatre commands.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are a union territory of over 500 islands, lying in the Bay of Bengal, far closer to Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia than to the Indian mainland. Indira Point, on Great Nicobar, is India's southernmost point.
The Ten Degree Channel separates the Andaman group from the Nicobar group; the Six Degree Channel separates Great Nicobar from Indonesia's Sumatra.
Barren Island, in the Andamans, is India's only active volcano.
The islands give India a vast Exclusive Economic Zone — a very large share of India's total EEZ — and, in effect, a permanent presence 1,200 km east of the mainland.
The Malacca Strait, between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, is among the world's busiest and narrowest shipping chokepoints, carrying a very large share of global seaborne trade and most of East Asia's energy imports. Whoever can watch its western approaches has real strategic leverage — this is the geography behind the phrase "Malacca dilemma" as applied to energy-import-dependent economies.
Other Indian Ocean chokepoints to know: the Strait of Hormuz (Persian Gulf), Bab-el-Mandeb (Red Sea approach), the Sunda and Lombok Straits, and the Suez Canal beyond.
The islands also carry history: the Cellular Jail at Port Blair, where freedom fighters including Veer Savarkar were imprisoned; and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the tricolour here in 1943, the first Indian territory claimed by the Azad Hind government. Ross Island is now Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, Neil Island is Shaheed Dweep and Havelock is Swaraj Dweep.

Theatre commands — the reform debate

Today's structure: the Army has 7 commands (plus ARTRAC), the IAF 7 (five operational), and the Navy 3 — with different boundaries, different headquarters and separate chains of command. Only the ANC and the Strategic Forces Command are joint.
The case for theatre commands: modern war is multi-domain — land, sea, air, space, cyber and information at once. A single commander with all assets in one theatre can act faster than three coordinating headquarters. It also avoids duplicating logistics, training and repair infrastructure.
The case for caution: each service has a distinct culture, doctrine and way of fighting; a badly designed integration risks blunting all three. The transition itself is a period of vulnerability, and India's two very different fronts — a continental frontier with China and Pakistan, and a maritime theatre — do not map neatly onto a single model.
Where the ANC fits: it is the living proof of concept — an existing joint command with two decades of experience in exactly the coordination problems theatreisation raises. Its record, good and bad, is the most useful evidence India has.
The balanced position: jointness is not optional, but sequencing matters more than speed — common doctrine, communications and logistics first, structures second.

Why it matters

Act East in practice. The ANC's patrols and exercises with Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore are Act East policy conducted in grey hulls rather than communiqués.
A model, not just a command. Whatever India's theatre commands eventually look like, the ANC is where the lessons already exist — which is why the reform debate keeps returning to it.
Development with restraint. Large infrastructure plans for Great Nicobar raise genuine questions about ecology and tribal communities — including particularly vulnerable groups such as the Shompen and the Sentinelese. A candidate who acknowledges both the strategic need and the ecological cost gives the mature answer.
