The launch was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command. The three phases of ballistic flight β boost, midcourse and terminal β are worth naming, since ballistic-missile defence is built around intercepting in a chosen phase.
Solid vs liquid propellant is the other reliable contrast: solid fuel can be stored ready-to-fire, launched at short notice and handled easily β which is why every modern Agni beyond the first generation is solid-fuelled; liquid propellant offers finer thrust control but needs fuelling before launch, adding delay and vulnerability.

The Agni family and India's missile programme
The list, learned by range:
- Agni-1 β about 700 km, short-range.
- Agni-2 β about 2,000 km.
- Agni-3 β about 3,000 km.
- Agni-4 β about 4,000 km (this test).
- Agni-5 β 5,000 km and above, India's intercontinental-class missile, canisterised for rapid launch.
- Agni-P (Prime) β a newer-generation missile in the 1,000-2,000 km class, with improved accuracy and handling.
- Prithvi β the short-range, surface-to-surface family (Prithvi-I, II, III).
- K-family (K-15 Sagarika, K-4) β submarine-launched ballistic missiles, the sea leg of the deterrent.
- BrahMos β the India-Russia supersonic cruise missile, named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva.

The Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), conceived under Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and launched in 1983, produced the original five β Prithvi, Agni, Akash, Trishul and Nag β and was formally completed in 2008. The nuclear triad and command structure
The strategic frame, and the part that decides interview questions:
- A nuclear triad means the ability to deliver nuclear weapons from land, air and sea. India's legs are:
- Land β the Agni series;
- Air β fighter aircraft such as the Mirage-2000, Su-30MKI and Rafale;
- Sea β SSBNs, nuclear-powered ballistic-missile submarines of the Arihant class, carrying K-15 and K-4 missiles.
- The sea leg is the most survivable, because a submarine at sea cannot be located and destroyed in a first strike β it is what makes an assured second strike credible.
- Nuclear Command Authority (NCA), formed in 2003, has two councils: the Political Council, chaired by the Prime Minister, which alone can authorise nuclear use, and the Executive Council, chaired by the National Security Adviser, which provides inputs and executes directives.
- The Strategic Forces Command (SFC), also raised in 2003, is the tri-service formation that manages and administers India's nuclear arsenal and would execute an authorised strike.
- India's declared nuclear doctrine (2003) rests on: credible minimum deterrence; No First Use, with retaliation to a first strike being massive and designed to inflict unacceptable damage; no use against non-nuclear-weapon states; retaliation authorised only by the civilian political leadership; and a moratorium on further nuclear testing.
- India's tests: Pokhran-I (Smiling Buddha, 1974) and Pokhran-II (Operation Shakti, 1998). India is not a signatory to the NPT or the CTBT, but is a member of the Missile Technology Control Regime (2016), the Wassenaar Arrangement (2017) and the Australia Group (2018).
Why a "user trial" matters
A point worth making, since the release names the SFC:
- A developmental trial is conducted by DRDO to prove the design.
- A user trial is conducted by the operating formation β here the SFC β to confirm the weapon performs in service configuration, with service crews, under service procedures.
- Repeated user trials are how a system moves from developed to deployed and reliable, and they also serve as signalling β a demonstrated, working deterrent is what deters.
Why it matters
For the essay/interview and bigger picture:
- Deterrence, not war-fighting: under No First Use, these systems exist to make the cost of attacking India unacceptable, not to be used first.
- Strategic autonomy: indigenous design and manufacture mean the deterrent cannot be switched off by an external supplier.
- Civilian control: that only the Political Council chaired by the Prime Minister can authorise use is a constitutional principle as much as a military one β a point worth making in any SSB discussion.
