- The virus's large genome encodes many proteins that suppress the host's immune response, so a simple killed (inactivated) vaccine tends not to work β one of the rare cases where the standard approach fails.
- Most experimental success has come from live-attenuated vaccines β a weakened strain that induces immunity β which then raise questions of safety, reversion to virulence and the ability to distinguish vaccinated from infected animals.
- That last point matters for trade: a good veterinary vaccine ideally allows DIVA β Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals β so a country can prove its herds are disease-free rather than merely vaccinated.
