How coal forms — and the four ranks
Start with the science, which is where NDA questions live:
- Coal is a fossil fuel formed from plant matter buried in swamps and deltas, compressed under sediment over millions of years. Heat and pressure drive off moisture and volatile matter, progressively enriching carbon — a process called carbonification.
- The ranks, in ascending order of carbon content, hardness and calorific value: 1. Peat — the first stage, high moisture, low carbon, smoky, poor fuel. 2. Lignite (brown coal) — soft, high moisture, mainly for power generation. Neyveli (Tamil Nadu) is India's great lignite field. 3. Bituminous — the most widely used; coking (metallurgical) bituminous coal is essential for steelmaking, where it is converted to coke in the blast furnace. 4. Anthracite — the highest rank, hardest, over roughly 85-90% carbon, burns with a nearly smokeless blue flame; rarest in India.
- Practical distinction: coking coal for steel; non-coking (thermal) coal for power. India imports much of its coking coal because domestic coking reserves are limited and high in ash.

Where India's coal is — Gondwana vs Tertiary
The geography half of the topic, and a reliable MCQ source:
- Gondwana coal — about 250 million years old (Permian), forming roughly 98% of India's reserves. Found in the valleys of the Damodar, Son, Mahanadi and Godavari, i.e. Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. Major fields: Jharia (India's largest and richest coking coal field, Jharkhand), Raniganj (West Bengal — where Indian coal mining began in 1774), Bokaro, Karanpura, Talcher (Odisha), Korba (Chhattisgarh), Singrauli (MP), Singareni (Telangana).

Commercial coal mining — the policy story
The governance half:
- In 2014, the Supreme Court cancelled 204 of the 218 coal blocks allocated between 1993 and 2012, holding the process arbitrary for lacking consistent and objective criteria, and requiring a transparent, auction-based framework.
- The Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 put re-allocation on a statutory footing; the first auction tranche was launched in December 2014. Between 2015 and 2020, ten auction tranches and nine allotment rounds returned 76 mines to production.
- On 18 June 2020, commercial coal mining was formally launched under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission — a successful bidder may now sell coal to any consumer in any sector at market-determined prices, with participation opened beyond the public sector.
- The result: the share of captive and commercial blocks in national production rose from 10.9% in FY 2021-22 to 20.2% in FY 2025-26.
