Soil Health, Degradation & Conservation: An NDA Geography Explainer

On 24 July 2026, the government spotlighted soil as a strategic national resource — "beneath every harvest lies healthy soil" — highlighting soil testing, balanced nutrient use and climate-resilient farming, with the Soil Health Card Scheme having issued over 25 crore cards. For an NDA aspirant, soils are a core physical- and economic-geography topic: the types of Indian soils, erosion and degradation, and conservation are all high-yield, frequently-tested material.

Why soil matters

Start with the basics. Soil is the thin top layer of the Earth where plants grow — a mix of weathered rock (minerals), organic matter (humus), water, air and living organisms. It provides nutrients for crops, stores water and carbon, and supports biodiversity. Because agriculture (and food security) depends on it, healthy soil is a strategic national asset. But soil forms extremely slowly (centimetres over centuries), so once it is lost or degraded, it is hard to replace. This physical geography is exactly what the NDA geography notes build.

NDA questions love soil types. India's main soils:

  • Alluvial soil — deposited by rivers; the most widespread and fertile, covering the Indo-Gangetic plains (India's grain bowl); great for wheat, rice, sugarcane.

Soil degradation and erosion

The examinable threats to soil:

  • Soil erosion — the removal of topsoil by water (sheet, rill, gully erosion) and wind; worsened by deforestation, overgrazing and poor farming.

  • Salinisation and waterlogging — from over-irrigation (bringing salts to the surface).
  • Desertification — productive land turning barren in dry regions.

  • Soil horizons: soil is layered into a profile — the O horizon (organic litter), A horizon (topsoil, rich in humus), B horizon (subsoil), and C horizon (weathered parent rock).
  • Humus — decomposed organic matter — makes soil fertile and helps it hold water and nutrients.
  • Macronutrients for plants: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) — the "NPK" of fertilisers; imbalance (too much urea/nitrogen) harms soil.
  • Soil pH — acidic, neutral or alkaline — decides which crops thrive and which nutrients are available.
