Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari: The Ninth Poshan Maah and Ten Years of PMMVY

The Ministry of Women and Child Development will launch the 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah on 9 September 2026 at the Rudraksh International Cooperation and Convention Centre, Varanasi. Union Minister Smt. Annpurna Devi will open the month with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Minister of State Smt. Savitri Thakur and the State's women-and-child minister Smt. Baby Rani Maurya. The theme is "Hamari Anganwadi Hamari Jimmedari" β€” our Anganwadi, our responsibility β€” and the programme is built on five themes, the fifth of which marks ten years of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.

Nutrition schemes are a CDS staple because they carry dates, amounts and statutes. This piece lays out the machinery the month is meant to move.

The month and the mission

Poshan Abhiyaan β€” the Prime Minister's Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment β€” was launched by the Prime Minister on 8 March 2018 at Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, with targets that are still the yardstick: cut stunting and under-nutrition by 2 percentage points a year, anaemia among children, adolescent girls and women by 3 points a year, and low birth weight by 2 points a year. It turned a set of departmental programmes into a Jan Andolan, and its two calendar fixtures are Poshan Maah in September (first held in 2018, hence the ninth edition) and Poshan Pakhwada in March.

The constitutional hook is Article 47, a Directive Principle that makes raising the level of nutrition and the standard of living a primary duty of the State; the Directive Principles page shows how such duties become schemes.

Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0

The Union Budget 2021-22 merged the older programmes into Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0: Anganwadi Services (the Integrated Child Development Services scheme that began on 2 October 1975), Poshan Abhiyaan and the Scheme for Adolescent Girls. Its delivery point is the Anganwadi Centre β€” about 14 lakh of them, each staffed by an Anganwadi Worker and a Helper β€” and its data spine is the Poshan Tracker, the app on which growth measurements and service delivery for close to 9 crore beneficiaries are recorded.

The Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) is the food component: Take Home Ration for children under 3 and for pregnant and lactating women, and Hot Cooked Meals at the centre for children of 3 to 6. Two 2026 reforms shape this Poshan Maah. Revised SNP guidelines for the first time define a Hot Cooked Meal and make SNP Menu Boards mandatory at every centre, so that entitlements are visible to parents. And guidelines of 25 June 2026 provide for Anganwadi Management Committees (AMCs) β€” parents, Panchayat members and SHG women who review service delivery β€” at every centre.

The five themes

  1. Dietary diversity and adequate protein β€” recipe demonstrations with local ingredients from every food group, Poshan Melas, and a "Protein-Rich Foods" campaign pushing plant and animal protein into daily meals.
  2. Fresh hot cooked meals β€” weekly menu rotation with millets, pulses and seasonal vegetables, live demonstrations and community tasting sessions with parents, Panchayats, SHGs and AMCs.
  3. Community ownership and accountability β€” constitute and operationalise AMCs everywhere, hold at least one AMC meeting per centre during the month, display menu boards, and have AMCs and Mothers' Committees monitor meal quality and menu adherence.
  4. Nutrition, early stimulation and education β€” for 0–3 years, home visits under Navchetana and the revised Home Visit Scheduler, with a drive to record all 34 developmental milestones for every enrolled child and fast-track referrals through Village Health, Sanitation and Nutrition Days and the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram; for 3–6 years, play-based learning under Aadharshila, an ECCE Day at every centre, exposure visits to primary schools for 5–6-year-olds, toy drives and community quizzes on childcare.
  5. Ten years of PMMVY β€” a 100% saturation drive to enrol every eligible pregnant and lactating woman, faster Direct Benefit Transfers, and a PMMVY Toolkit for States to localise.

PMMVY at ten

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana has run since 1 January 2017. Its statutory root is Section 4 of the National Food Security Act, 2013, which entitles every pregnant woman and lactating mother to a maternity benefit of not less than β‚Ή6,000 β€” as nutrition support and as compensation for wage loss, so that a woman can rest before and after delivery. The scheme pays β‚Ή5,000 for the first living child in instalments tied to early registration, ante-natal check-ups and immunisation; the balance of the β‚Ή6,000 comes through the institutional-delivery incentive of Janani Suraksha Yojana. Under PMMVY 2.0, part of the Mission Shakti umbrella since 2022, a second child attracts β‚Ή6,000 in one instalment β€” only if the child is a girl β€” a design meant to push back against sex selection. By July 2025 the scheme had reached more than 4 crore beneficiaries. The economics of why cash at the right moment changes outcomes is on the poverty and development page.

The measurement problem

Why does the ministry keep counting? Because the last full national count β€” NFHS-5 (2019-21) β€” found 35.5% of children under 5 stunted, 19.3% wasted and 32.1% underweight, with anaemia in 67.1% of children aged 6–59 months and 57% of women aged 15–49. The Poshan Tracker now gives monthly, centre-level readings between surveys, which is why the month's emphasis is on milestone recording and menu adherence rather than on new entitlements. The clinical side β€” what protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies do to a child β€” is covered on the deficiency diseases page.

The launch itself will open with a walk through a Poshan Mela, screen beneficiary testimonials on hot cooked meals, take-home ration, home visits and early education, and put the Union Minister in live conversation with Anganwadi Workers before the launch films. The month then runs in every State and UT through Anganwadi Centres, schools, Panchayats and households.

πŸ“‹ How this gets asked (PYQ pattern)

Nutrition-scheme questions come in four shapes. The launch item β€” year and place of Poshan Abhiyaan, or the month of Poshan Maah. The amount item β€” β‚Ή5,000 versus β‚Ή6,000 under PMMVY and the girl-child condition. The statute item β€” NFSA Section 4, or Article 47 as the Directive Principle. The ministry item β€” which scheme belongs to Women and Child Development and which to Health, with RBSK and Janani Suraksha planted as confusers.

The fresh 2026 hook is the ninth Poshan Maah at Varanasi with its five themes, Anganwadi Management Committees and the decade of PMMVY, likeliest to appear as a statement pair on the theme and the maternity-benefit amounts. We describe the recurring pattern, not any exact past question.
