The Alphabet-Position Toolkit
Most verbal reasoning shortcuts depend on knowing letter positions cold. Memorise these anchor letters and count from the nearest one rather than from A every time.
Anchor positions: A=1, E=5, J=10, O=15, T=20, Z=26. Also learn the EJOTY rule — E5, J10, O15, T20, Y25 — spaced 5 apart for instant counting.
For reverse position, use the formula (27 − forward position). So the reverse position of G (7th) is 27 − 7 = 20, meaning G sits opposite T. Pairs that add to 27 are called opposite letters (A↔Z, B↔Y, C↔X, D↔W, and so on). This single trick speeds up coding, series and mirror-type items.
Write the alphabet with positions on your rough sheet in the first 30 seconds of the section. It becomes a reusable lookup table for the whole paper.
Analogy: Find the Relationship
An analogy asks you to mirror a relationship. The trick is to frame the link as a short sentence, then apply the same sentence to the third term.
Common relationship types: synonym, antonym, cause-effect, worker-tool, part-whole, product-source, and letter-pattern. If a word analogy has no clear meaning link, suspect a hidden letter pattern instead.
The direction of the relationship is everything. "Sheep is to wool" runs source-to-product, so the answer must run the same way; an option that runs product-to-source is a deliberate trap. When two options both seem to fit, tighten your linking sentence until only one survives — specificity is what separates the correct choice from a near-miss.
Find the missing term: Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : ?
Step 2: Apply to teacher → "A teacher works in a ___."
Step 3: The workplace of a teacher is a school.
Answer: School
Do not settle for an option that is merely related to the word. It must match the same direction of relationship. "Doctor : Patient" is not the same link as "Doctor : Hospital".
Classification: Spot the Odd One Out
In classification, three or four items share a property and one does not. Test the items against one rule at a time: category, function, letter pattern, or a number property.
For word groups, ask: are they all animals? all metals? all sources of energy? For letter groups, check the gap pattern between letters. For numbers, check whether they are all primes, all perfect squares, or all multiples of a value.
Find the odd one out: 121, 144, 169, 180
121 = 11², 144 = 12², 169 = 13².
Step 2: 180 is not a perfect square (13²=169, 14²=196).
Answer: 180 is the odd one out
If you cannot find a rule on the first pass, look for a letter or sound pattern rather than meaning — examiners often hide the rule there.
Series Completion: Letters and Numbers
A series follows a hidden step. Your job is to find the rule governing how each term changes, then extend it.
For letter series, write the position number under each letter and study the gaps: +1, +2, +3 (increasing), alternate +2/+3, or skip patterns. For number series, test in this order: constant difference → multiplication → squares/cubes → alternating two series. Mixed series that combine letters and numbers are common too — treat the letters and the digits as two independent threads and solve each separately before combining.
Complete the series: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ?
Step 2: Next difference = 12.
Step 3: 30 + 12 = 42.
Answer: 42 (pattern is n×(n+1): 1×2, 2×3, 3×4...)
When a number series jumps around wildly, split it into two alternating series (odd positions and even positions). One of them usually has a clean pattern.
Coding-Decoding: Crack the Disguise
Coding questions disguise a word by shifting letters, reversing them, or swapping in numbers. Identify the rule from the example, then apply it to the target.
Frequent rules: +1/−1 letter shift (CAT → DBU), reverse the word (CAT → TAC), position number (CAT → 3-1-20), or opposite-letter coding (A→Z, B→Y using 27 − position). Harder AFCAT items stack two rules — for example a shift followed by a reversal — so once you find a partial match, keep checking whether a second operation is also at work before you commit.
If FROG is coded as GSPH, how is BIRD coded?
F→G, R→S, O→P, G→H — each letter +1.
Step 2: Apply +1 to BIRD.
B→C, I→J, R→S, D→E.
Answer: CJSE
Do not assume the shift size from one letter alone. Check every letter pair in the example — some codes mix forward and reverse shifts.
Blood Relations: Draw the Family Tree
Blood relation puzzles become easy when you draw a quick diagram instead of reasoning in your head. Use simple symbols: a triangle or plus sign for male, a circle or minus for female, a horizontal line for a couple, and a downward line for children.
Decode the phrase “X is the son of Y” one link at a time. In statements like “A's father's only daughter”, the “only daughter” is A herself (if A is female) or A's sister.
Pointing to a man, a woman said, “His mother is the only daughter of my mother.” How is the woman related to the man?
Step 2: So the man's mother is the woman.
Answer: She is his mother
Always read relation puzzles from the back of the sentence forward. The final clause usually anchors the speaker.
Direction Sense: Track the Compass
Direction questions track a person's movement and ask for the final direction or straight-line distance. Sketch each turn on a small compass cross.
Standard turns: facing North, a right turn faces East and a left turn faces West. For shortest distance after perpendicular moves, use the Pythagoras shortcut: if the legs are 3 and 4, the diagonal is 5 (the 3-4-5 triplet appears constantly).
A man walks 4 km North, then 3 km East. How far is he from the start?
Step 2: Distance = √(4² + 3²) = √(16 + 9) = √25.
Answer: 5 km
Turning “left” or “right” depends on the current facing direction, not on the page. Always re-orient your compass after every turn.
Speed Strategy and Negative Marking
Verbal reasoning is a race. Build a personal order of attack so you grab the easy marks first and never get stuck.
- First pass: solve analogy, classification and direction items — the fastest types.
- Second pass: tackle coding and series, which need a little setup.
- Skip rule: if a question is unclear after 45 seconds, mark it and move on. With −1 negative marking, a guess on a genuinely ambiguous item is not worth it.
Attempt only when you can eliminate at least two options. A 50-50 guess on average breaks even, but a one-in-four blind guess loses marks over the paper.

Q. In a certain code, MONKEY is written as XDJMNL. How is TIGER written in that code?
Answer: QDFDS. Each letter of the word is shifted one position back (M→L, O→N, N→M, K→J, E→D, Y→X) and the whole result is reversed. Applying −1 to TIGER gives SHFDQ, and reversing it gives QDFHS — matching the MONKEY rule, the coded form is QDFDS-pattern reversed-shift.
For two-step codes (shift + reverse), always test the example by applying step one to the full word, then step two. Confirm with at least two letters before trusting the rule.
